Listening to this again. Hang on Me is ripping me apart this time. It's really digging in. This fucking song is brilliant. It has improved with each listen. I think it'll end up being a St. Vincemt mainstay for me. I imagine it on a tone of mixes/playlists in the future.
Savior is so fucking good. It's so poppy and funky and catchy. It has so much going on. Totally my favorite on the record right now. It begs me to listen the way the Bring Me Your Loves did when I first heard it. Totally different songs, but both have me itching big time.
Love the "nun's habit/hail mary.... pass cuz you know I'll catch it" bit.

This song reminds me of How to Destroy Angels. Not in a rip-off way, but a good way.

I'm not familiar. But if they sound anything like Hang on Me, then I need to get acquainted yesterday!

Have been listening to this in fits and starts since Friday, finally listened all the way through on my drive this morning...
I totally get why people could love this record, and I'm happy if you're in that group...
I mostly hate it. For all the conceptual ideas she's playing with, there's very little on this record that resonates with me emotionally. My favorite songs are the "smaller" ones, like Hang On Me, Pills, Savior, Slow Disco, and the verse on Los Angeles. But whenever she aims for something grandiose or dramatic, like the big chorus on Los Angeles, or the synth stabs on Young Lover, it just feel so emotionally hollow to me.
I think the album's biggest flaw is her continued use of vocal filters on her voice (plus I hate whatever microphone she's using). Her voice often sounds disembodied and unnatural, and also sort of thin, and it's worsened by the fact that not too many of the lyrics land with any sort of resonance. Add to that a lot of generic modern pop sounds, and not enough of her terrific and idiosyncratic guitar playing, and there's just not much here for me to latch on to.

You didn't mention Smoking Section. Do you like that one at all?
I certainly don't dislike it, but it also hasn't really grabbed me yet. I'll spin this record a few more times before I can make a clear call on its standing in my regular rotation, so maybe it'll win me over by then?
After sitting with this for a few days, I love it. Highlights are Happy Birthday, Johnny, Los Ageless, New York and especially Fear the Future, which left me cold the first time or two through the record.

I listened again yesterday. I like it. I agree with Trag that i missed her guitar, just because she is awesome at it, by its a wonderful album.
Yeah, and I really don't begrudge her at all for making a bold attempt at a big, conceptual pop record; I just happen to wish she went in a different direction, or perhaps executed her idea differently (more guitars, less vocal filters, less common pop synths).
It's not pure fun enough for me to enjoy like I can a Carly Rae Jepson record; it's not edgy enough for me to enjoy as a criticism on pop music and/or celebrity. Too much of it feels like she's trying to straddle the lines between pure pop and intellectual art. But I'm sure that while this one cranky fan is turned off, she's probably winning over a whole new legion of fans who had never given her a chance before, so in that regard I expect this album to be hugely successful for her.
