To answer that we would have to establish the ground zero of the American tradition. For me it's what I tried to illustrate above. The mix of black blues that rose from slavery and white blues which came over from Britain/Ireland/Scotland folk music. Basically Robert Johnson meets the Carter Family. The British gravitated to the Robert Johnson side of things since they already had their own folk tradition and added electric guitars. The British then (to me) dominated the rock music till the alternative rock era in the late 80's early 90's. Really what was missing that the 60's British musicians added was the edge of the blues in a white digestible package.
