Finally getting around to this! It's really good. The Helsinki songs sound way better in the album context, and -- in my opinion -- with the lyric sheet. I was kind of underwhelmed by "Hetty O'Hara Confidential" initially; I love it now. I'm still in the "early processing" phase (maybe a little more so than usual, some of the melodies feel a little obscure and labyrinth-like), and my initial instinct is that it's not quite the achievement that Look Now was, but it's a fascinating, sprawling record that benefits from its sharp aesthetic contrasts, and feels like an unflinching commentary on the times. Can't wait to unpack it some more.
I don't know a ton about Elvis Costello. But I really dig this new album. And it reminds me a lot of Tom Waits. Which, of course, I mean as a compliment. This album is really exciting.
The album also reminds me of some latter day Bowie, too. In a weird way.

Come to think of it, the contrast between the more abrasive Helsinki stuff ("No Flag," "We Are All Cowards," "Hetty O'Hara" -- that last one even has beatboxing!) and the more Vaudevillian, Tin Pan Alley-sounding material is really Waitsian -- great observation! I am really loving this album too, listening to it pretty much every day, with new stuff jumping out every time. Right now I'm really obsessed with "Newspaper Pane."
