I don't really listen to RnB / soul at all. But I know Jackson 5 as I heard it growing up, and I did used to love Lauryn Hill.

Cold War (from the first album) was the single that pulled me into her orbit full-throttle. harmless is right about the new album, it's hard to pick out tracks because it's such a beautiful, cohesive, "sonic journey" as he put it. Dance Electric, It's Code, and Give Em What They Love are all killer cuts from it though; You can't go wrong with one of those.

I'm really enjoying "Primetime" in the same way I enjoyed "Oh, Maker" from the previous record. A lovely respite from the chaos around it.

Primetime is really beautiful. I could see that being the next single.

And I hate when people say this type of thing b/c it's pretentious and obnoxious and normally untrue, but here goes - she's not the type of artist you can digest in small servings. Honestly, listen to The ArchAndroid several times in a row and let it be the experience it's meant to be.

Then, if you don't like it, at least you tried being not uncool for a few hours.

This is why listening to Cold War and checking out just doesn't work. The beauty of her music is the mishmash of styles and genres that she tries on throughout an entire album. She puts her influences through a blender and out comes an android version of James Brown, Sly, Stevie, Prince, MJ, Outkast, Chaka, Jimi, Lauren...

My favorite song of hers is definitely Oh, Maker, which is just a beautiful melody machine. But then you listen to something like Mushrooms & Roses and are transported to another world, like a distant cousin of Third Stone from the Sun.

Listening to her second album, i think its way better than the first one...more funk, more soul, a more cohesive effort.

I figured I'd put this here, since they have pretty intense Janelle Monae ties...

Deep Cotton (who appeared on The ArchAndroid and produced parts of The Electric Lady, and I believe are in her touring band as well), are releasing their own free EP this week at http://deepcotton.net/.

They might not be for everyone, but they had one of the very best singles of 2012 (We're Far Enough From Heaven Now We Can Freak Out), so I'm pretty excited for this. That song appears on the EP (or Fixtape, as they call it), along with this other pretty cool track, Runaway Radio (http://www.spin.com/articles/deep-cotton-runaway-radio-janelle-monae-stream/).

Here's We're Far Enough From Heaven Now We Can Freak Out, cause there's never a bad time to post this song...

Do yourself a favor and at the very least read the "About" on their official site. It's one of the more clever pieces of writing you'll find on a band's website these days.

Everybody involved in the stuff I've heard of her so far really knows what they're doing. Their way of dealing with musical influences is really intriguing.

It also sounds very good. I have yet to take the time to really let it grow on me.

Cool. We're sort of boycotting TV at the moment so we miss these things. We'll catch it asap.
