Same here - Diorama was so different to everything else going on in Australian music at the time.
I think that Aftertase is the best Helmet album by a long shot.
That's an interesting thought. Why do you like it more than their other stuff? It definitely marks a shift in "feel" for them.
might have something to do with the production, but it's also probably their least heavy/poppiest album. I don't know, for me it just totally clicks. Betty would come in second and then maybe Strap It On. Don't care for Meantime, or the new stuff, although I haven't listened to much of the new stuff. Oh, also the lyrics on Aftertaste are like my favourite lyrics ever.
