Finally got around to Polachek's latest, and I fully understand the hype. She and Danny L Harle did an outstanding job on this.

Just a fascinating melding of sounds and influences -- the instrumental behind "Pretty In Possible" reminds me of super early Massive Attack/Enigma. "Crude Drawing of an Angel" is sparse yet meticulously textured, like a love letter to Peter Gabriel. The soaring synths of "Smoke" would be right at home in a Jamie xx DJ set. It's all over the place in the best possible way. And Polachek's vocals refuse to miss throughout.

Avant-pop? Righto. This is some good shit.

^^ Shweet. The last album of his I put some extended listening time into was the the "First Cow" soundtrack! This seems a tad different. Nice grooves.

I haven’t listened to him enough, but I do like that he was in Lambchop and Silver Jews for a bit.

Yep, checking this out at work this fine Friday morning while I review work and bill shit out. Good stuff - very interesting, engaging and enjoyable.

Seems I can do avant-pop no problems. Just keep that art rock/pop shit away from me.

Huh? Are you sure you've got the right genre here?

I wasn't saying Polachek was art-rock/pop, I was agreeing with your take on her being avant-pop (whatever that is).

My point is that I am not generally a fan of art-rock/pop (think Animal Collective, Panda Bear etc).

To me "Crude Drawing of an Angel" is like a Sade song with this vaguely threatening aura to it, it's so good. The polyrhythms of "Sunset," the harmonies in "Hopedrunk Everlasting," everything about "Billions"... it's all so lush and thoughtfully crafted.

Did you listen to Pang yet? It's just as good.

Some stuff that no doubt technically fits the definition, but generally art rock is a big red flag for me.

I'm all about the groove.

Crude Drawing of an Angel is the best song on the album IMO. It’s so perfect for every mood.

Sade is a probably more accurate. I'm not super familiar with their (her?) stuff, aside from the odd track that I've seen recommended by fretless bass nerds.

I'll give Pang a spin once the new one has marinated a little.

I love Sade

And yeah it's a band but it's also the name of the lead singer and most people think it's just her.
