Any song that has 2 significantly different recorded versions that you consider elite to your personal group of favorite songs. If you only had 10 hours of music to live on, both versions would be there or at least, strongly considered.
If I Were a Carpenter -Johnny & June C. Cash -Bobby Darin Inspiration for the thread. Johnny and June is the best duet I’ve ever heard. Bobby Darin predates I think. Never heard it until The Sopranos. Double drop D heaven. Both are covers.
Love Ain’t for Keepin The Who Roger sings on the lighter Who’s Next, Pete on Odds and Sods. The former could be played at a wedding. The latter while a teenager rips posters off the wall.
Jeremy / No Jeremy Pearl Jam The original has aged incredibly well for me. About half the songs from Ten have. I found Red Rocks around 2012? Right before they released it for Xmas so whenever that was. Typical Pearl Jam Fan euphoria to find a song you never heard and then they release it. I battle over these. Both are examples of the band at its best.
White Light/White Heat -The Velvet Underground -Lou Reed On the album, you hear one of the most influential rock bands in recorded history in their most natural state. The live recording on Reed’s “Rock and Roll Animal” is an almost shocking display of how incredible a guitar can sound played by a technically average player.
