You talking 'bout a turntable or having the herpes, bro?

I hope your Neil show is a 90 minute version of My New Robot.

We will prevail and perform our function.

Are you going from wall to wall?

Not sure I understand. The speakers will be wall mounted; I want to reach the receiver that’s on a console against the same wall, but I don’t want to see the wire. So yes I think “wall to wall” applies but??

Everything will be within the same wall is what I'm asking. You're not wanting to run the wires across the room, I gather?

what is the desired configuration of the speakers? Straight up from console? One in each corner?

These are the Bose 201s, which use the “Direct Reflect” technology. Long story short, they’re supposed to be higher up on the wall. Receiver is between them, lower. Basically a wide V shape.

Wife wisely vetoed the “finagle it from the garage” approach as I’d be drilling through insulation and we’d be losing heat.

Probably should divorce her.

Just kidding. She’s smarter than us.

How does Bose not use Bluetooth technology in these by now?

They might! These are vintage speakers from about 1990.

Ah. To do what you’re wanting to do seems like you’d have to go thru some studs. I don’t know how you’d do that. I’d first check and see if there’s some reasonably priced option to incorporate Bluetooth into it.

Let's talk subwoofers.

I'm looking for something to work well with my current bookshelf speakers, but also something that I'll hold onto once I move beyond the bookshelf speakers into something bigger (in another 3-5 years?). Definitely needs to be powered. I'd probably prefer something front-firing rather than down-firing; I'm looking for a more articulate bass sound rather than something room-shaking.

Willing to spend between $500-$1000 if it's going to stick around for a long time. A phase switch would be nice. Won't currently be used with my TV, but maybe someday. This would be in my living room, but it's a fairly open floor plan, with no real separation between living/dining/kitchen.

Anything you guys love that checks these boxes? I'm reading tons of reviews on Crutchfield, have my list currently narrowed down to:

$400-$500 range:
Klipsch SPL-120
ELAC Debut 2.0 SUB3010 (has both front and down-firing speakers)
Bowers & Wilkins ASW608

$700-$1000 range:
SB-2000 Pro Subwoofer
PB-2000 Pro Subwoofer
SB-3000 Subwoofer

Also I upgraded from the Bose 201s to a mint pair of 301 Series IVs for just a little over $150. Score!

I know that audiophiles typically turn their noses up at Bose, but the Direct Reflect thing is nice given my price range and floor layout...And if I'm being really honest, I will have very little time for "sweet spot" listening, and generally loathe ear fatigue. The 301 sound is a trusted aesthetic with a pleasant midrange, and decent top/bottom end, and definitely won't give me ear fatigue.

Transparent they are not. But the 301s are a reasonable choice until my kid isn't so demanding of my time and I can actually sit in a single spot for the length of an album.

I guess the ELAC has no manual controls, it's all dialed in by an app; they try to sell you on the app by virtue of its "self calibrating" capability that will supposedly dial in the EQ perfectly for your room. But what happens when they stop supporting the app? Resale goes to nil, and you're stuck with whatever setting it had. So that's out.

I mentioned this in the Neil thread, but does anyone have an Audioengine B1 or something similar, pretty much a dongle that makes an older amp bluetooth compatible? Pretty much a bluetooth aux cable that has a good DAC and can do HD files. I pretty much just stream with Spotify and whatever I added manually on my phone (another thread altogether) but I really want it to listen to the new Neil archives this weekend. Think its work the $200?

If you bite on this, let me know. I had been looking at them a couple weeks back, and decided to stick with HD wired (see my posts above). Would be keen to hear of an audiophile's experience with NY and bluetooth.

In other news, today I'll be taking apart my vintage turntable to clean the speed pots with Deoxit, and get some machine oil into the motor. Speed is fluctuating all over the place, even with a new belt.
