Early death cab (everything up to We Have The Facts...) has such a good guitar and drum tone on their recordings. Ben Gibbard is also an ultra runner and therefore de facto a cool guy, so there's that.

I dont care for the guys voice. I checked out Postal Service years ago after i was told i should also love Transatlanticism. None of it stuck and ive seen death cab twice

seriously though, his voice sounds awful on top of rock instruments
I can appreciate this but I don't think that same philosophical mismatch exists on the early albums, which are pretty low-fi and ultimately assign the same aesthetic weight to the instrumentation (especially the guitars, which are clean, arpeggiated, and generally pretty slow and delicate) as they do to Gibbard's voice. Songs like "Company Calls Epilogue" and "Information Travels Faster" and "The Employment Pages" are where they really reach their potential; once the commercial ambition kicks in and the sound gets "bigger," he sounds not dissimilar to how you describe.
Death Cab aren't a band I'd ever go hard to the mat for -- I generally understand what would put someone off them -- but they're one of the few bands where I really have those cliched "they were better before they were famous"-type feelings, and think it's a shame that a lot of their best qualities were fading into the background right as they were seeping into the public consciousness.

Yeah that’s a good take. They did sound more twee the bigger their sound got. Which made the Postal Service record so satisfying for me, because there Gibbard sounded fragile but not affected
