Late to the party. My shop had a copy of the 2013 Albini Mix on the shelf today so I grabbed it. What're your thoughts after having lived with this for nearly a decade?

It's fine for what it is. But no different from the "Devonshire Mixes" on the Nevermind box or any of the alternate mixes found on that shit rarities box. It's not a remix like your typical restoration remix by Steven Wilson or whatever. It's a deliberately different view of the album. People often compare it to the original mix but it's apples to oranges. It probably should have been called "2013 Alternate Remix" or some such shit.

Agreed with all this, but with the qualification that I prefer this to the official mix, primarily because of the following changes:
1. Very Ape fucking slays on this thing. Utterly thrilling.
2. My two least favorite tracks -- Rape Me and Pennyroyal Tea -- become more enjoyable to a significant degree.
3. The HF rolloff makes it more likely that I'll blast the whole album despite my aging earholes.
I do miss the bigger room sound at times, and I'm still getting used to the ugly version of Serve the Servants, but these are minor tradeoffs to feel a rekindled love affair with this album.

In the interests of pedantry, the original In Utero album was always an Albini mix (with the exception of two songs, Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies).

Yeah, it was cool to finally get the original Albini mixes of HSB and AA as bonus tracks on the anniversary release. It means one could finally compile an Albini-only mix of the album. I wonder why the Scott Litt mix of Pennyroyal Tea was not used for the album? They chose to keep the original Albini mix instead.
