Mardi Gras - by and large, this is the one (and final) CCR album as a three piece band upon the departure of Tom Fogerty, and I at least feel it’s pretty clear it didn’t work. You can hear a band that sounds comparably hollowed out. The album itself pushes more toward a country vibe but just never seems to take off like it should - save for closer Sweet Hitchhiker. The cover of Hello Mary Lou was fun and Someday Never Comes is okay, but this is largely a bust for me.

An interesting note is that they live albums all came after they were done plowing through their studio albums so I will hit up the three most prominent of them (Live in Europe, The Concert, and Live at Woodstock - which is relatively new in terms of its release) next.

There are so many groups I grew up around that I just didn’t have their albums. This was one of them. I am glad I got through all the studio stuff and the live albums I have heard at least The Concert and Live at Woodstock so I know those are solid.

Live in Europe - this is the first of the three love albums I will cover and really the least exciting of the bunch. For the most part, much like Mardi Gras it feels by the numbers and a tad hollow performed by the three - piece band. Keep On Chooglin’ was sort of the main redemption of this release but with the other two live albums out there, there’s no real reason to revisit this one. No wonder this would lead to the huge feud between Fantasy Records and John Fogerty.

The Concert - this seems like an upgrade on the last live album in nearly all respects. Similar to the last one, all the songs are quick versions save for the extended Keep On Chooglin’. But the performances are far superior and have much more life to them. It also helps that the song selection here is a little better with Tombstone Shadow, Don’t Look Now, The Midnight Special, and The Night Time is the Right Time taking the place of the Mardi Gras songs. This is also the live album I am most familiar with (originally called Royal Albert Hall even though it wasn’t performed there - I swear I may have this on vinyl on my shelf). In any event, if you are going to pick one of these two to jump into, I clearly recommend this one.

Live at Woodstock - of the three, this is probably the best. Really the second half of the hour long set is one phenomenal rendition after another with the combination of Keep On Chooglin’ and encore Suzie Q taking more than 20 minutes of their time, which the extended jamming from CCR being their strongest suit, even if they seems intent to bang through hits in the first half of the set. 99 and a Half sounded great live, as did an epic The Nigjt Time Is the Right Time. There’s a good reason this is one of their more famous sets.

CCR was always like this for me, had a coulple of large best of /collected songs. Great band though.

I typically lament that the world moved back into singles from the album craft, but there are a handful of greatest hits albums so phenomenal that they are their own gems. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’s Greatest Hits, Chuck Berry’s The Great Twenty-Eight, Neil Young’s Decade, and CCR’s Chronicles Vol. 1 immediately come to mind.

Credence Clearwater Revival is one of those enduring bands that had such a great run over such a short period of time. That swamp rock sound is now in many ways the bedrock of what is classic rock and it was great to spend a week in that space. I think as noted here by a few people, it’s easy with them to lean on Chronicle Vol. 1 and not go further because that greatest hits volume nearly perfectly captures a band in its exact sound. But to do only that ultimately is a disservice to them. Songs like The Midnight Special, Ramble Tamble, Born On the Bayou and quite a few others show how far this sound can expand and draw you in. Cosmo’s Factory alone is that album in these journeys that you walk away with thinking this is what I came for. After some long journeys, it was nice to listen through this one. In the end, what struck me most was that this band was best at its loosest even though they were most famous for their concise and tight sounding hits.
