Ben Harper seemed to be on to something big, then he released Burn to Shine and it has been a disaster ever since

From Burn to Shine to the present Ben Harper has had lots of great parts of albums, but at least with the Innocent Criminals, he let the need to do a little of everything get in his head. I really liked the first album he did with Relentless7 but the second one was more of him getting in his own head. You could take his 8 or so albums since and make 4 great albums out of them. I wouldn’t call it shitting the bed - more like coming down to earth.

Also, both of his albums with Charlie Musselwhite are fantastic.

It was in my mind. It was the one moment he didn’t overthink it and just gave us an album of inspired blues rock. I saw him with R7 on his tiny club tour with them I think 3 or 4 times in that first tour - at the Mercury Lounge, at some small bar on Bleecker Street (Captain’s Catch or something resembling that name), at the Highline Ballroom, and maybe the Bowery Ballroom? I just remember each of those shows being so energetic and exciting for him - like a needed fresh start.

Edit - looked it up for accuracy - 3 times: Mercury Lounge 12/11/08, Kenny’s Castaways 12/12/08, Highline Ballroom 2/17/09

Oh yeah, Michelle branch really tanked, huh? I think she was a pretty typical case of “interesting songwriter gets overtaken by A&R pop-friendly interests.”

Arctic Monkeys. Maybe theirs was a slow-shit, but it's a shit all the same.

I also love how this thread is mostly people discussing whether or not My Morning Jacket and Incubus were ever good. (Incubus were good, fuck you)
