Aerosmith is A # 1. The 70s albums are strong, then the slow decline with The 80s but still serviceable somehow as pseudo glam, then the 90s it all falls apart as they fall under the spell of Alicia Silverstone music video madness. Everything from then on is deplorable.

The question is when they jumped the shark. I have always thought it was somewhere between the haircuts and Napster, but some people like what came after.

Some say they died with Burton, others say they died with the Black Album. Then there's Load/Reload.
See...I know they had a massive shift in sound for the Black Album that is a far change from ...and Justice For All - but it’s a great album nonetheless. Load is the first in the string of bad albums and I never checked in to see if they ever recovered.

I enjoy Metallica pretty unrepentantly up through Garage, Inc.; Hetfield's voice got really croaky on the symphony album, and I never got into anything after that.
I feel like this thread title probably describes most bands eventually, though. Perhaps more interesting would be artists who had an anomalously terrible record amidst a run of otherwise great ones. But, I'm not going to start another one of these threads...

I could add the Allman Brothers Band after Brothers and Sisters. Yes, they remained a vital live concert force for decades to come, but I am not sure any of their albums after that one are listenable but for a couple of songs.
