They're similar to Coldplay, I think -- the intense reaction to their music is probably a sort of societal overcorrection for the fact that something so average and unremarkable managed to become so popular. I don't dispute it, necessarily -- I definitely remember a point where I stopped seeing the Pinks and Avril Lavignes as risks to the intellectual integrity of my people, but thinking that all those dinks listening to Coldplay could be saved for all eternity if only someone could sit them down for a proper listen to "OK Computer." But I don't mind the Eagles -- "Hotel California" and "Lyin' Eyes" and "Take It Easy" are as imprinted on my DNA as anything. I love the chords to "Hotel California."
A lot of my friends hate both the Eagles and the Grateful Dead. I've had to defend the two bands for years. Mind you, I"m not a super fan of either, but I really like some of their songs (more so with the Dead).
The Eagles, while kinda boring / vanilla, aren't so bad. Besides, vanilla is delicious, but it's safe, and I guess that's the complaint I hear with the Eagles. Still, they have a handful of great songs, and I'll always have a soft spot for them as they were in many ways part of the soundtrack of my youth.
I've always been fond of: Take It Easy, Life In the Fastlane (Joe Walsh!), Tequila Sunrise, Victim of Love (corny, but I like it), The Long Run, The Sad Cafe, Witchy Woman, Those Shoes (Beastie Boys made good use of that one on Paul's Boutique) and a few more of their hits.

Of the pro-Eagles posts here at least one of them should mention The Last Resort. It's one of those earnest Don Henley songs that he does so well. Or of the anti-Eagles posts here at least one of them should mention The Last Resort. It's one of those earnest Don Henley songs that he's so clichéd about.
