Real talk, Ruddo:

Both my dad and my uncle were really big John Prine fans, and I grew up hearing his music fairly often. But I’ll be damned if I know which albums those were, or which are his best…

Last year’s Tree of Forgivesness is one of my favorite albums of the last 10 years, easily. There is an elemental quality to his writing that puts this record up there with the Allman Brothers, JJ Cale, the Beatles...one of those albums I can put on to feel grounded, domestic, safe and happy.

I love how his voice has changed after his cancer; of course I don’t expect his voice to be the same as I go back and visit his older records. That being said, which of his prior albums would you suggest I start with?

:heartbeat:

Thanks, trag.

I didn't have the chance to see him live until 2012 maybe? And a few time since. Every show has been an emotional, spritual experience. The man is an incredible storyteller and even at his age, it is so obvious how much he loves doing what he does. And his lyrics are true americana, they make you live what he lived, in pain and joy. Truly a great songwriter/musician.

Also, the first time I saw him, Jason Isbell opened for him. Isbell's wife came out and performed a couple of songs with Prine. After the show, I eventually followed Isbell and his wife on social media, and to this day it is obvious how much they adore this guy's music. They are always talking about him.

Ok so which of his more recent albums should I check out. Do any of the others before Tree of Life have the gravelly voice?

Did you see him with a band or does he just play solo?

For Better or Worse is great, it is all duets with female singers. Fair and Square is good too. He plays some by himself and maybe 2/3 with backing guitarists. The times I've seen him, it has only been guitars, no percussion.

Also, I'll try and find it, but he does a cover of an old Carter Family song that made even the super old people in the audience get up and dance.

It's amazing how much passion and energy he still has. So just last weekend, a festival of some sort he was due to play in was cancelled, I think because of weather. So they did a "pop up" show in NYC instead, not wanting to just take the weekend off.

Had to cancel his European dates due to hip surgery. I hope he recovers at his age. I would love to see him again at some point.
