Fuck.
I heard a lot of Prine as a youngster because my dad and my uncle were both big fans. I came around by my own accord with The Tree Of Forgiveness, and have enjoyed diving back into this old records with adult ears.
Masterful songwriter. His lyrics were never judgmental of their subjects, and his music was never anything other than comforting. It takes a special breed to write music like that.
I don't have a long history with his music. My wife took me to see him in 2010. We didn't get many concerts here back then, so she bought the tickets as a birthday present on a whim knowing I liked that kind of thing. I went in only knowing Sam Stone and Sweet Revenge and left a fan for life. The last time we saw him was Eaux Claires fest in 2017. They hosted a tribute show featuring Jeff Tweedy, Swamp Dog, Phil Cook, Jenny Lewis and others, ending with a short set from Prine. It threatened rain through the whole show but didn't start downpouring until the second he hit the stage, abruptly stopping as soon as he finished. Somehow that seemed perfectly sad and hilarious, just like his music. He was one of a kind and I hate that he went out this way.

Guys, I am not a moderator! I swear to God! Why does everyone think I'm a moderator?

This is from when I saw him in Charleston in 2014. And it's how I picture him when I listen to his music. Just up there, with guitars, telling a story.

Drinking a beer from my favorite local brewery (Hop Butcher for the World). The stamped code on the underside of the can has a canning date and time and then reads “R.I.P. John Prine.”
