Dammit malloy, see my OP where I designated this as a catch-all thread for both minimalist music and krautrock. I agree they are not the same! But for me, they both tap into similar veins of tension/release through their focus on simple, repetitive melodies and rhythms, and empty space. I think a band like Can is a couple degrees from someone like John Adams, and about a thousand degrees from someone like Pearl Jam.

ha! just notice the original title. i retract my previous statement. on your second point, we agree.

My main man Jesper Eklow (guitarist from the glorious Endless Boogie) has released an soundtrack for "the greatest movie never made" Blood Meridian. It's a chill, sombre listen, "done in the old ways" with JE on "guitar, loops, field recording and tinkery".

Here's the opening track.

Oh man, you've just reminded me of a band I listened to 15 years ago - Blood Meridian.

Let's get ruined.

For anyone that likes Richmond Fontaine, Handsome Family or other alt america depressing shit.

Weather starting to turn here, so I'm going hard on minimalist stuff again. Just scored an OP Reich's Octet on Discogs in NM condition for $35. :heartbeat:

At some point the title track got a name change to Eight Lines, but anyway this is it. The other two tracks are also stellar.

Music For a Large Ensemble (Newer recording/performance):

I can't even with this song. Those swelling horns get me all hot and bothered.

Somehow I'd never listened to Neu!'s 86 before. Very different pallet than their 70s stuff, but really really fun.

My favorite from the album, I think. Shades of Tusk-era Fleetwood Mac and My Life In the Bush of Ghosts:

It's so good!

Music for Mallet Instruments is next on my list to dig into.

I don’t remember that at all. I’ve listened to just about everything he’s put out, but there’s a wide swath of stuff that I need to revisit. Please report back!

Probably the best example of how I feel on a day-to-day basis, the conflation of joy and stress and hope and sadness and rage and humility all at once: My kid babbling in the back of the car, yelling that "I WILL watch Peppa Pig when we get home, I WILL!" when all I want to do is take a nap and some guy just cut me off in traffic and there's some telemarketer calling and interrupting the kids music and now she's totally melting down and oh god it's so beautiful and I can feel every inch of it

I took Steve Reich with me on a run today. I don't think it's coincidence that my pace was even for the majority of it. Great music for zoning out and falling into a cadence. I was stopped by a freight train about a half a mile from my end point. Watching the train pass while the string and woodwind patterns of Eight Lines hummed through my ears was a very nice way to spend a few minutes of my morning.

I love Reich for working on my computer , for the same reason. I blink and I’ve gotten an hour of great work done.

Yes, agreed. I also listen to some Reich late at night when everyone's gone home and I'm closing the bar books on a night shift. It hits differently in the morning when you're outside and moving. Better than coffee.

Oh damn I’ll have to check that out. Spenno and bodysnatcher both turned me on to some amazing Budd a while back, but I haven’t gone deep yet, just a few specific albums.

I'm only familiar with his debut and his last album, Heavy Sun.
