Van Morrison. Outside a few of his main hits, I never paid much attention to him. I've just listened to his 1968 Astral Weeks album. Wonderful stuff. The songs "Astral Weeks" & "Madame George" are beautiful.

Check out Moondance too. I've never been grabbed by Astral Weeks that way I have with that one.
Been diggin into The National's last one and really likin what I hear from the new one.

Fela Kuti - High priest of Pot-infused Black Power Afrobeat. Got into him after reading an interesting bio in Uncut magazine (the music magazine for the discerning uncircumsised gentleman).
Opposite People / Sorrow Tears and Blood is particulary excellent.
Groove driven and smooth. Afro beat to tap your foot to. Enjoy it on a long summer's day.
I know ive heard this song multiple times over the years but i wasnt sure who. I think westerberg covered it live a few times and it may just be re recorded by millions of others but I recently sought the original and fell in love. Just classic pop brilliance

Yeah, I love this song. It's just two chords. Will Ferrell plays a version of it in "Stranger than Fiction", a woefully overlooked little movie.

There is something to be said for being able to create lasting melodies that perfectly slide over and through two simple chords. from the verse melody into the refrain - there is a natural brilliance in creating something and connecting it all over an A and an E
