It's good, but it's just a sequel to The In Sound... And they did it better the first time.

I'm confused.

Why is The In Sound considered a compilation and The Mix Up is considered their seventh album? If The In Sound isn't a proper album, how can it have a sequel?

The In Sound was composed largely of bossanova-tinged instrumental tracks that appeared on other albums, plus a few new cuts.
The Mix Up is comprised of songs cut from the exact same cloth, only they were composed explicitly for the record.

Ah. That makes sense. Thank you.

That's not true at all. The Mix Up was all original material. The In Sound was a compilation full of stuff you could already find elsewhere.

We covered this earlier in the thread, Chud.

So you agree that you were wrong when you called The Mix Up a sequel to The In Sound?

Ill Communication will be hard to beat. It's a damn near perfect record. And it contains a song that I'd be willing to call the best song of the 1990s. It's a special record.

License to Ill is a fun record. But, yeah, the growth the band showed, even as early as Paul's Boutique, is unbelievable. It's almost a different group on that second record.

It really does. As far as debut albums go, it's still up there for me as one of the best. But holy fuck what happens next is just exceptional. And now so much of LTI feels dated and a bit silly. I still listen to it and enjoy it though.

I'm not saying LTI is garbage, I'm saying compared to everything after it's garbage. That's an important distinction, and what I'm saying isn't as much a knock on LTI but a testament to how brilliant everything that came after it is.

I would tend to agree. But with the caveat that if you prefer Paul's Boutique, you're not necessarily wrong.
