I LOVE the Beastie Boys. But To the Five Burroughs and Hot Sauce Committee were both pretty disappointing. There some great highlights, but I can't listen to them front-to-back like I can the other records. I did enjoy The Mix Up quite a bit.

The In Sound From Way Out
Hello Nasty

Some Old Bullshit

I think their beats got pretty weak after Hello Nasty. The raps and energy on Hot Sauce are great, a lot of the music just sort of bores me. Ditto Five Burroughs.

It seems crazy to me that someone would rank Licensed to Ill above Hot Sauce

Come to think of it... I haven't heard The Mix Up either. Ha! I've got TWO "new" Beastie Boys albums to listen to. 8-)

It's good, but it's just a sequel to The In Sound... And they did it better the first time.

I'm confused.

Why is The In Sound considered a compilation and The Mix Up is considered their seventh album? If The In Sound isn't a proper album, how can it have a sequel?

The In Sound was composed largely of bossanova-tinged instrumental tracks that appeared on other albums, plus a few new cuts.
The Mix Up is comprised of songs cut from the exact same cloth, only they were composed explicitly for the record.

Ah. That makes sense. Thank you.

"5 Boroughs" was the album that got me really into the Beasties -- I'd grown up loving their hits, but hearing them tackle such serious issues with such compassion and such class on that album (while losing none of their humor or playfulness) really opened my eyes to what great artists these guys really were (though ultimately I ended up liking a lot of their older albums more).

"Hot Sauce" was just such a joy -- they sound like they're having such a ball on it, and knowing now that it's the last time they'd ever get to do it adds poignancy to the proceedings and makes the whole thing resonate that much louder.

Both albums just seem like raw, old-school hip-hop-style productions to me -- no issue at all with those beats.

Including proper albums only:

Ill Communication
Paul's Boutique
Hello Nasty
Check Your Head
Hot Sauce Committee
To The Five Burroughs
Licensed to Ill

If I had to include The Mix Up it would probably slot above Five Burroughs.

That's not true at all. The Mix Up was all original material. The In Sound was a compilation full of stuff you could already find elsewhere.

The quality of these albums is so consistent. For me, there's MUCH LESS space between the quality of the top and the quality of the bottom than when I rank Pearl Jam albums. I always know which Pearl Jam albums I'm going to shove the bottom. With this list, I could change the order significantly and still be content.

Anyone who doesn't have Licensed to Ill at the bottom of their list needs a lobotomy.

We covered this earlier in the thread, Chud.
