i kinda like Morning Phase. i don't know much about Beck, or know how his albums rank with fans, but is it typically that low on lists?
I think most people love it. Sea Change and Morning Phase are very similar albums, and unlike anything else in his catalog. I'm not a big fan of either, but at least Sea Change has some groovy drum-and-bass work going on.

ah ok. makes sense then... Sea Change is probably my favorite Beck album. Morning Phase reminds me of it, but with the somber blanket peeled off

Yeah, MP is a little more "easy listening."
Til you get to "Wave" and he starts repeating "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-SO-LAAATION" like he's living in a cave in the woods

So I listened to El Guero again today on my drive. Man, what a boring album! I'm surprised so many of you guys like. It lacks the scuzz n' funk of his early stuff, yet it also lacks the confidence for space, air, and strong melodies that he tapped into on Modern Guilt. The beats are trying so hard to combine HEAVY with WEIRD. The production is way too sterile. And then the songs themselves are mostly dull as shit. (Broken Drum is excellent -- maybe one of my favorite Beck songs of all time; and Rental Car is fun enough for its silliness). I would now rank this at the very bottom of my list, right next to Morning Phase. This is the sound of a brilliant musician running on autopilot and out of fresh ideas.

I like Guero a lot. It's been a long time since I've listened through it (I should do that asap), but I know I'm a fan of a lot of these songs.
From memory, these are all good.
E-Pro (great), Que onda güero, Girl (kind of like this one), Black Tambourine (great), Hell Yes, Broken Drum (one of Beck's best), Scarecrow, Go It Alone, Farewell Ride

Man, I haven't listened to anything from Guero other than Girl in years. I remember decently liking it in high school when it came out.
I listened to a few tonight. Some better than I remember, one not as good. I still need to go through the entire thing, but I know I'm gonna still like it a lot. And as far as Girl goes, it's a decent song, but nowhere near a favorite.

Late to the party here but thanks a lot for this -- I hadn't realized how much of this is not "bootleg" material (which is just slightly beyond my scope of interest with Beck), but a really thorough roundup of EP's, B-sides, compilation tracks, etc. I love stuff like this! I can't say I'm a fan of all of Beck's early experiments but the best of it is in a league of its own -- such a great goofball spirit to it, yet offhandedly touching when the time is right.
