I've not listened to Midnight Vultures, but I'm really digging Colors still.

Note - The only Beck albums I own are Colors and Guero

Oh my gosh, Rangi. There is so much good material.

I thought "The Information" was pretty much dog shit, but I liked "Morning Phase".

Midnite Vultures.

Ugh. I'll pass.

Colors is definitely his poppiest album as far as mainstream pop is concerned, but I think it was good and not too over-produced. And the songs I saw live translated really well to that setting.

The song played in the credits to The Lego Movie 2 sounded like a Colors b-side but I didn't think anything of it because I wasn't watching the credits. But it was a catchy song so I went looking for the soundtrack and how about that, it was Beck.

I think he is channeling his inner Sigur Ros with the new single.

Thanks for the bump ruddo, I hadn't heard anything about these new tracks.

Hyperlife (1:37 clip): This sounds promising, almost like the Tron Legacy soundtrack with vocals.

Uneventful Days (full song): I like this a LOT. I appreciate that Beck's voice is pushed back a bit, allowing the synths to take up a good amount of space.

Saw Lighting: Meh. I don't love this one. Feels like a confused mix between a Pharell pop song and a leftover riff from Mellow Gold.

I love Colors. Probably my second fave after Mutations.

This new album is boring. It’s the perfect soundtrack to an evening spent thinking about kicking the stool out from under your feet.

I forgot he even had a new album. His newer stuff has been so bad, it makes Lightning Bolt by Pearl Jam sound like a good album.

The new album is good, though a bit same-y. It's not an issue per se (as the album seems very dedicated to particular sonic mood), but even for a 40 minute record I was feeling a bit antsy by the end. Saw Lightning sticks out like a sore thumb, and the final track Everlasting Nothing is phenomenal.

He's also left Scientology apparently, so there's that.

I thought it was pretty good, like it was Morning Phase trying time meet Colors halfway. I liked probably 4-5 songs but didn’t dislike any of them. It also weirdly sounds like it could easily be a soundtrack to Stranger Things.

I'm just happy he's "unaffiliated with Scientology." The rest is gravy.

started my Beck playlist at Mellow Gold and just let it play and there's a lot of stuff in here. I'm listening with closed-ear headphones and hearing a lot more than usual. Great stuff hidden in the places speakers tend to murk up.

I think one of the great things about Beck is that if you're in and interested, he can be one of the most rewarding catalogs and careers to dig around in, especially if you go into stuff that's not necessarily on a record. There's so many offbeat paths, different live iterations and takes on songs, one-off live tracks, etc. He's the kind of artist that has a lot at hand if someone's intrigued.

Just finished reading a great New Yorker writeup about Beck, which does a lot towards illustrating how important LA is to his music; https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/12/02/beck-is-home

Sounds like he lost some great material in the Universal fire:

That's sad. So much was lost in that fire

Big deal. This is the case for every artist on Universal, stretching back 100 years.

The question now is...what artists on Universal have vault material that still exists?

I also have a hard time feeling sympathy for artists that "lose" entire unreleased albums.

That's what fucking digital backups are for.
