Cherry Bomb and Don't You Evah are such good showcases of when they get that sexy groove going. One of the only rock bands that can convincingly pull off a soul sound.

Both are incredible tracks. I love that album.

My Mathematical Mind probably my favorite Spoon song.

It’s up there for me. Depends on the day. They just have so many that could vie for that spot.

man, i haven't listened to gimme fiction in ages. i just may have to put it on tonight.

It was my first real introduction to them so it will always stand out, but also it’s a great album. Let’s go see them live.

They’re playing here in April. I’ll pay for your ticket.

Kill the Moonlight

This is another fantastic album, and consistent in quality to the rest. I often need the first two songs to sort of calibrate myself to what’s coming from them, but this one kicks right in nicely with a great one-two punch of Small Stakes, and The Way We Get By. Something to Look Forward To continues the tradition of excellent third tracks from this band. Stay Don’t Go, Jonathan Fisk, Paper Tiger, Don’t Let It Get You Down, You Gotta Feel It, and Back to the Life all similarly feel like small explorations that do big things, which I think is the M.O. for this band.

Girls Can Tell

What’s interesting about this phase, and in going in reverse, is that you can sort of hindsight see the evolution of this band. While this may not be the three albums that followed, it is working towards that direction. The top three again are excellent: Everything At Once, Believing is Art, and Me and the Bean really get you set for this album that consistently hits its marks. The Fitted Shirt, Anything You Want, and Take a Walk are another trio of great songs stacked up. Take the Fifth was also amongst my favorites here. Just another solid outing from them.

A Series of Sneaks

I am sure there’s a huge contingent of Spoon fans that drool over this album. It’s got a lot of good ideas, big hooks, and a punk attitude to boot (and very concise songs). It’s a bit less of my sort of vibe, where the latter albums heard first allow the songs space to reveal themselves, these mostly feel like really good but unfinished ideas. Those first three songs are again excellent, and my complaints aren’t in creativity or originality, but more I find myself more connected with this band when I have time to invest in the songs than quick shots of adrenaline with interesting ideas tossed in. I think the first album is more of the same but I reserve judgment of course until I have heard it.

Telephono

Their debut album starts off pretty well. The first four songs here are pretty good, but then after that the vibe I kept thinking of was Incesticide but not nearly as good. Compared to the rest of their catalogue, this is the one album that doesn’t really feel like it’s stretching and pulling their sound. It just sort of sounds like a mid-to-late 90s band that peeled off a bit of reverb and fuzz but still seems almost emulating the Nirvana sound on the b-side album noted above. There’s nothing particularly wrong with that, but I didn’t find it all that appealing or necessary for me. I’ll happily take Spoon from 2001 forward for sure. And really that seems like a major success for me since I had dismissed them 15 years ago. I am glad this community convinced me to give them another shot.

It would be fun, but I would indeed be nervous.

Today I was in the office and had the album playing in the background, but had to keep the volume pretty low. I’d heard 4 or 5 of the songs already, and as the album went on I knew I’d really enjoy it on a serious listen. But then the Lucifer on the Sofa track came on and I almost instantly had a visceral reaction causing chill bumps. I’m probably going to listen to it on blast all day tomorrow.

Everything Hits at Once is a great one, definitely among my favorites of their earlier stuff.

Not so fun fact: the band has never played “Don’t Let It Get You Down” live

Let me think on this for a few days. Chicago is a long way.

Devil & Mr Jones --> Wild remains my favorite combo in quite a while.
