Enough interest to merit a thread? I hope so. Like most music fans of a certain age, Nirvana's Unplugged and "Backwater" introduced me to this band. I bought II and loved it. Same for Too High to Die. I never really dug deeper, though. Now I'm going down the rabbit hole. Anyone care to tag along?

The most lenny post ever. And layered, at that.

I always saw the Meat Puppets as the sleepy southern version of the Minutemen: Lots of twang and some really poetic lyrics, but for some reason they were always lumped in with these punk bands when they were sort of their own thing.

I went through a period where I went through their catalog, but these days if I reach for anything at all, it will undoubtedly be II.

Mirage has a decidedly Athens, GA feel.

Meat Puppets through Forbidden Places is really great, but grunge and recognition didn't do them any favors.

Their sound changed (starting with Too High to Die) and Cris was out of control.

As I mentioned in another thread, them and Butthole Surfers were chewed up and spit out by major labels during the grunge era.

I don't really fault them, but they had a crazy great sound before switching to stock alt-rock.

I wonder if I should even bother with their post THTD output.

So much texture and interplay on those early albums. I know nothing of their personalities. Were they calculated in their major label move or was this just a case of naive geniuses getting into a bad deal?

The problem with MP albums are that some of them are super unpolished, and not in an awesome Pavement/Husker Du kinda way. Just in a completely muddled/"what the fuck is going on?" kinda way.

The records between Up on the Sun and Forbidden Places sound like total shit.

Mirage sounds pretty good to my ears.

Golden Lies and Rat Farm are probably their best latter albums.

The original version of "Plateau" is so much better than the Nirvana cover. Love that song.

Agreed.

On the other hand, I think I prefer the unplugged version of “Oh Me”

Some of the songs sound too Zen Arcade-like, super treble-y, a weird echo and weak drums.

I should probably listen to a Husker Du song at some point.
