I fucking love "Dig". It's a genuine metal song that is also genuinely catchy. Mudvayne are well above most of these bands; their technical skill is legit.
I like the video too. Cool angles and colors. I like the singer's makeup.
"Dig" is ridiculous -- a showcase for every stupid fright-night cliche in the nu-metal playbook. "First, we'll lead with some scary whispering -- so disturbing! Then we'll jump around in our Halloween costumes and make some evil, sadistic-looking faces, and then -- get ready for it -- we'll fucking SCRRRREEEEAAAUUUGGGHHHHMMM!! And check out this detail -- drops of red liquid flying through the air! Like splattered blood! Nothing says HORROR!! like splattered blood! RRAUUGGGHHH!!" This strikes me as sucker bait of the worst kind -- I have no idea what you people see in it. The expert musicianship described upthread must be found elsewhere because musically this song is completely unremarkable; an occasional bass chord rattling in isolation is hardly my idea of a memorable bassline.
The Incubus song is basically an N*SYNC ballad with some rock guitars but good grief -- vote for that.
I'm beginning to realize that KD takes himself entirely too seriously and routinely settles for lazy, low hanging hot takes. He also knows fuck all about heavy music. It's meant to be ridiculous, dummy.

Unsubscribed.
Oh, please -- don't pretend like this stuff was some big self-referential farce that everyone was in on except me. People who were into this stuff were serious as a heart attack about it.
You are certainly correct that I have a bias against metal that is characterized by overwrought, throaty growling and theatrical displays of monster-movie nonsense. I have explained my musical objections to these things very fair-mindedly in a variety of other threads in this tournament. If these are "hot takes," so be it. If the shoe fits.

I’m not above appreciating the horror clown aesthetic if it’s done in an entertaining way and backed by good music. Mudvayne, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, etc. I dig it.
I want to know KD’s thoughts on Black Metal and corpsepaint.
I'm sorry if I am coming across as a jerk here. I am passionate about music, and I do take it seriously -- yes, too much so at times. While I don't think that having no taste for nu-metal signifies humorlessness, I don't want to be a stick in the mud about it, so please forgive my lack of discretion.

I have no experience with either but already hate both

Your commentary on their aesthetic is whatever, but I think you've wrongfully dismissed just how technical the rhythm section is in the context of rock/metal. Or perhaps you're not willing to admit it because you're a hard line indie rock/jazz/Eddie Vedder guy. Hmm.
