Just got Voodoo on vinyl and maaaan, what an album. I think this guy is one of the artists of the 90s and perhaps due to his lack of body of work is kinda forgotten.

But man, Voodoo might be the best R&B album of its time, and its up there with the work of Gaye or Mayfield.

i remember pre-gaming in the parking lot of an outdoor amphitheater and hearing this amazing bassline/beat combo from the car a couple over from us and when i walked over and they said it was 'D'Angelo' i was so surprised, and i cannot to this day remember the name of the track but have long wished i could

the MTV commerciality aspect may dissuade people from exploring further ... but that song sounded so amazing musically, at a time when I fancied myself as 'mr i listen to music' nonetheless

he's got the goods

Questlove really bring it in every song. And yeah, the groove in his songs is unreal.

No question Voodoo is a stellar record, but i think Black Messiah is on another level.

Yeah, Black Messiah might be better. Its been a while since i listened to it.

I guess Voodoo is a lighter one? More groovy and funky while BM is more direct and concise.

Voodoo arguably the best album post 2000. Probably my most played vinyl.

Been returning to The Charade a lot lately.

I almost feel dumb talking about him. Like, yeah, of course he's really great.

The best person to listen to about this guy is Questlove. He really has the insight and the ability to convey it.

Voodoo and Black Messiah are some of the best sounding albums I've ever heard. The engineering is ridiculous. Pino Palladino on the fretless bass has no equal. The drums are actually fucking perfect. Then there's the guitars, vocals, strings. Unfuckingbelievable.

Nice bump! I adore Black Messiah, still listen to it fairly regularly. I agree Voodoo is a masterpiece, but I almost never listen to it; it might be unfairly lodged in my brain as a relic of the late 90s R&B stuff.

His story between the two albums is pretty interesting.

Basically that during the Voodoo era, the label went to great pains to cast him as a sex symbol; he wanted nothing to do with it, but he couldn’t fight the man. Had to agree to a whole bunch of workout shit, the topless photo shoots, etc...

Caused a downward spiral of depression and drugs that consumed him for over a decade. He was perpetually working on a follow up album — I know some people who worked random sessions — and he was lost in a downward spiral with no direction and lots of weight gain.

And then out of nowhere, boom, he drops Black Messiah and it’s incredible. Apparently he got hit shit together, and pulled the album together very quickly with some musicians he trusted and bonded with.

'Sugah Daddy' is the bop. So jealous Trag gets to hear this at ~14DR.

What year was this? Pre or post Black Messiah (2014)?

There are a great many tracks from his catalogue that fit this description.

I really need to go back to Voodoo. And I’ve never listened to his debut all the way through.

Mayfield: Superfly, Roots, and Curtis are all amazing

Gaye: The only two I know well are What’s Going On and Here My Dear, both of which are incredible. The latter is sort of a head trip — it’s a record he made to pay off his ex-wife, and he gets kind of experimental at times
