Too much. Too broad. I say we focus on Stax and Motown and set a date limit around the early 70s. There's more than enough songs for a good tournament within those limits. And LMS should run it

Also, to be clear, we're talking about song vs. song tournaments, right? Not drafting teams
I hope it's just song v song. Focusing on the 70s seems smart, Stax broke from Atlantic in '68.
You can't do Stax and not do the 60's. 67-68 was their peak. No Green Onions? No Otis Redding? No Knock on Wood? No Sam & Dave? This is a travesty. You're right Pete.

It would seem to me that a release by the Stax label that is distributed by Atlantic is still a Stax release.
It's actually quite simple: we decide on a date range, and we focus on songs released by either of those two labels during that range (including subsidiaries like Volt). Doesn't matter who owns it, if it was released under the Stax banner then it's fair game. So if it's a Stax release distributed by Atlantic it counts, if it's an Atlantic release outside of Stax it doesn't.

So no Aretha? No post-Stax Wilson Pickett?

Guys we could do a broader soul tournament but that's such an enormous catalogue of songs and also opens things up to a bunch of other questions about what even counts as soul and what should be included. Which is to say: it would still be neat, but also likely a nightmare to put together and to run

Ok honest answer is that I knew some of the genre’s most beloved artists were on Atlantic. Only last night did I learn about Atlantic’s deal with Stax, and the subsequent split in which Atlantic took some of Stax’s artists.
It should be considered for even a narrowly defined tourney I think.
