I'm on the same page. I remember enjoying it when it came out and then finding it almost comical upon revisiting it years later. I think her voice is paper-thin and her songs (at least on that album, I haven't heard the others) aren't strong enough to sustain their lofty pretensions. For some reason, though, I suspect she's capable of much more.

Yes.. I really liked that first record when it came out...I agree that it didn't age well...but the singles are still killer.
That second record is more consistent...really good record actually. Both records are far better than 'Zeitgeist' or those latest 'Courtney Love' records...
