This thing really shows how STP just aren't in the same league as these other bands for me.
To my mind, they're better than AIC and more consistent than SP.
Far better than AIC. Jar of Flies is amazing, but I don't really connect with more than a couple other AIC songs. STP is in the discussion for my second favorite band of all time.
1. Pearl Jam 2. Soundgarden 3. Alice In Chains 4. Stone Temple Pilots 5. Nirvana 6. The Smashing Pumpkins
I am also a fan of TOTD and Mad Season, but it's difficult to compare them to the other bands, since they had limited touring and just one album each. This is a great tournament for me though, as I have a lot of love for all six bands.
I think STP does lack consistency. They have some of the worst albums, mostly outside this tourney. However, Purple is a better album than any from SP and Nirvana.

Honestly, I think everything since Backspacer really damaged my love for PJ, especially PJ20. I've been so at odds with every decision they've made since. Even their old stuff suffers. It's weird, but it is what it is.

I think I have a fundamental issue with Billy Corgan that prevents me really enjoying SP.
that's understandable, but I think you're missing out.
I've heard Gish, SD, MC and the outtakes bsides album. There's a handful of tracks that I like and occasionally play. He just sets me off and I can't take him seriously.
I always regarded STP as the first grunge rip off band. I guess I never really gave them a shot because of that perception.
Are they actually good?
They peaked with their second album Purple, although they do have some standout songs in the albums surrounding that one. It's good.
I'd say Tiny Music is where they really distanced themselves from the pack. I'd check that one out.
I think Tiny Music has some great highlights, but is too uneven to compete with Purple. From an objective point of view, ratings on Allmusic and Rateyourmusic rate Purple as their best album, it was also their only no.1. album, and after Core, their biggest success with singles and album sales. However, I'll agree that it all comes down to taste, and therefore your opinion is 100% valid. It's perfectly possible to rate Core or Tiny Music on top of the STP discography. Three strong albums, and STP's best. I know LV likes No.4, but I think that is a step below the first three albums.
