One of my best buds engineered a couple sessions with her, and it was the EXACT same: No "Lauryn," no eye contact, no talking unless spoken to.

Apparently there's pretty hardcore rules for crew people to not look at or speak to John Mellencamp, too. The no eye contact thing is a really odd detail.

Yeah, that one always ticks me off. I respect Kevin Smith because he talks (and talks) about how everyone starts somewhere and he has a ton of respect for people trying to do something themselves. Then you hear about these people who started with nothing and now they can't even look their band in the eyes? WTF.
