Hi, have you ever taken a multi-day train ride across the US? How was your experience? How did you sleep? Did you get a roomette?

Considering a trip on Amtrak's California Zephyr from San Francisco to Chicago. It's three days I think? I'd like to just relax and see the sights, that sounds very appealing to me

We did an 8-9 hour ride up in Alaska a couple of years ago. I really enjoyed it. I totally get the appeal of doing a cross-country trek.

I’ve done east coast to west coast four times, and then the N-S coastal routes maybe six more times?

I love traveling by train. Absolutely get a room.

Also bring lots of trail mix and other shelf stable foods, you can only eat so much of the diner car fare.

My favorite part is making friends in the viewing car. One time I played pinochle for three straight days with a couple guys.

My least favorite part is just how greasy you feel at the end.

The viewing car, I really wanna just sit in the viewing car for hours.

What's this about the greasiness? Do you not use the shower?

The California Zephyr has showers, at least. The Lake Shore Limited (which I was also looking at, from Chicago to NYC) does too.

I haven’t taken the Zephyr in 20 years so I won’t argue.

I’ve done the Lake Shore three times and I never once got a shower in my room. Maybe in the family room? Or maybe it’s a new feature?

I looked into Amtrak trips a few years ago. I'm not sure I could sleep in the regular seats over a few day stretch, and roomettes were way too expensive. Overall it just didn't seem worth it.

imagine how much sperm has calcified in those showers

i dunno, there would be too many applicants they might need to develop an egalitarian method of selecting the lucky winners which could lead to widespread distress from the losers which could lead to lawsuits

better to just have paid government workers do it and savor the flavor as a nice perk to their regular day to day
