My favorite thing about the Dalai Lama is that when the Dalai Lama dies, the monks go around and find the baby that the Dalai Lama re-incarnated as and 'christen' that baby as the new Dalai Lama. But China says that they're going to pick the next Dalai Lama. So the current Dalai Lama doesn't like that and says that he just won't re-incarnate as a Chinese baby. He'll be an Indian baby or something.

fun fact: I was leaving my apartment one day in nyc and we lived directly across the street from the historical society...I got downstairs and was greeted by armed guards..I had to wait and watch Dalai and Laura bush get out of a black limo and go into the museum..

my wife and I were married by a Buddhist friend of ours, and she draped us in a khata that His Holiness had once spilled tea on. We still have the khata.

my dad got to work security detail for the lama when he visited the college where my mom worked back in the 70s. there's a cool photo of him in a suit and shades as the lama's getting out of a car.
