Not to derail dad’s plans, but is southern Italy even the best Italy? Tuscany — the coast and farmland, Siena, Firenze, with the Duomo, Galleria, gelato along the canal…Isn’t that the better area to spend a stretch of time?

all of italy is great
just for different things
i personally prefer the area surrounding florence better than florence itself
positano/capri in the summer are like something painted by ancient gods
you ever drink that limoncello? it comes from lemons the size of footballs. and they are sweet
it’s unreal
but for a core italy trip there must be rome

I only visited once, and found Torino and Milano to be completely charmless. The food was mediocre, oldest tiramisu I have ever tasted, was bought in a local bakery in the centre of Milano. We generally looked to eat sometime after noon, but then everything was closed. The people in the hotel were very rude, as were waiters in a couple of restaurants we went to. This has never happened to me, before or after, and I've travelled a fair amount. Always had a thought that Southern Italy would be more charming, certainly not worse. A local man I met in Torino, said that "below Rome, that's where Africa starts", and he meant that as an insult. I thought the guy was just a weird bigot, but have since heard that it's a normal saying in Northern Italy.

Milan is for work, not vacation
many beautiful areas of northern italy to go to: Liguria, Lake Como - milan is not one of them

Flying home from Minneapolis yesterday, we were mid flight when the pilot came on and just said “folks we’re having an issue with the plane and are returning to Minneapolis”. That was an hour into the flight. We landed and deplaned, which is usually never a good sign. 20 minutes later they said to reboard and we were on our way again. They gave us some vague description about a pressure sensor not working. I’ll admit, i was a little worried on that return back to Minneapolis

How long was the total flight? Seems weird to turn around and fly another hour back instead of just continuing.

I would’ve been more frightened getting back on the same plane.

Was only a 2 hour flight, but the airline had more planes/mechanics in the big city airport instead of our regional airport, I'm assuming.
Wease: my first thought was about getting back on the same plane!
