Watching Beto and Cruz spar last night was like watching candidates from two separate states. Such a generational and ideological gap between their respective constituencies, and the candidates played right into those differences. Sadly, I do not think Beto came across the way he would have liked by the end of it.

was reading a review this morning, i didn't realize Beto supports an assault weapons ban. Seems like a dumb position to take in TX; in MT, you'd have to be much more moderate on that issue to stand any kind of chance

I don’t think it’s the biggest issue driving the election, but yeah, that’s the sort of thing that plays to Cruz’s favor and helps the Texas GOP convince voters that Beto is left of Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders, which he is most definitely not.

Editor’s note: what Jonah was missing was that Ted thought this video would hurt his opponent because it showed him talking about police brutality to a room full of black people

Actual voting Texan: I don’t think it’s the driving issue in this election.

McParadigm: Here are some tweets about it, though.

Searched for it after my cousin in Lubbock, where my dad was born and where most of his side of the family still live, texted me an ‘lol.’

They’re having an interesting year. My dad (well dead) has six surviving brothers and sisters. All the brothers are vehement Trump fans, while one sister has left the Republican Party over him and one might, and I’m not sure a single of my cousins is conservative (I barely know one who lives in New Deal, so maybe?). Two of them are canvassing districts for democrats.

My family doesn’t puss out on talking politics with each other, but the generational language barrier happening down there is fascinating and getting worse.

Also, your post was that assault weapons bans are not a driving issue. What does that have to do with a video of him talking about police brutality? And, seni-unrelated question, what do you feel Ted Cruz thought he was getting out of pushing this Beto video?

I see that too. It was on full display at the debate last night. I think you and I might disagree about what that means for this election..

Yeah, I regret confusing the two issues in that post. Blame a lack of sleep, a chatty Uber driver distracting me, and a general tendency to look before I leap when reading a 2018 McP post.

The type of voter concerned about assault bans is the type of voter I suspect would also take offense to that video. It's a useful tool for a candidate whose main goal is to rally his base and scare the moderates into thinking Beto is Obama 2.0.

Guys the election season is going to be a real snoozer on RM if you keep treating each other with that sort of deference
