First they came for the word "mistress," and I said nothing because I was nobody's mistress.

My favorite was when they decided that the "B" in black was to be capitalized, but not the "W" in white (something that the left media wholeheartedly embraced btw, because they are braindead zombies).
They'll never top that one. Too comically transparent. Totally not political bro.
It's not 'transparent' when the intent is not obscured.

This is a new concept to me, so I googled it. NYT has a whole, long editorial about it, but this paragraph seems to sum it up in a way that I understand.
Quote:
The Times also looked at whether to capitalize white and brown in reference to race, but both will remain lowercase. Brown has generally been used to describe a wide range of cultures, Mr. Baquet and Mr. Corbett said in their memo to staff. As a result, its meaning can be unclear to readers; white doesn’t represent a shared culture and history in the way Black does, and also has long been capitalized by hate groups.

I don't think it's paywalled anymore, at least not for me, but it's usual "yeah, he is credited with discovering world changing concept A, but he benefited from colonialism so fuck 'em"
The quote I found interesting in there is this:
Quote:
Prof Frank Furedi, a sociologist at Kent University, said: “What they call ‘acknowledging the past’ is actually a kind of present-ism, where you read history backwards. It’s a way of socialising students into feeling that something is wrong with their own background, the life of their ancestors and inducing guilt.”
I'd never thought about it from that perspective, that by starting with events in the more gentle present (the results) and selectively working backwards, you create a very different perception of social evolution in the student than a more traditional flow. It makes a lot of sense when you hear people say things like "nothing's changed", when in fact nearly everything has and it's gotten unbelievably better, if they were taught this way.

Engineering students could soon be learning about how Sir Isaac Newton 'benefited from colonialism'
The eminent 17th Century physicist, mathematician and astronomer, who is widely regarded as one of the most influential scientists of all time, held shares in the South Sea Company, which traded in slaves.
While studying the ocean tides, he required tidal readings from around the world.
According to ScienceMag, some of the most important readings he acquired came from French slave ports in the Caribbean island of Martinique.
James Delbourgo, a historian at Rutgers University, New Jersey, said: 'Newton himself, who's really the paradigm figure of an isolated, non-traveling, sitting-at-his-desk genius, had access to numbers he wouldn't have had access to without the Atlantic slave trade.'.
Imagine being scared of people talking about this. Pathetic.
