He might be playing a master game. Saw something on twitter. The US never needed to drop the bomb on Japan. They should have just shown Japan they could with some mid Atlantic display of strength. Maybe he's doing that. Everyone knows NK is not and never will be a legitimate threat to the US. South Korea maybe. But that's it. |

There were large swaths of the military ready for a coup should the civilian leadership capitulate after the first bomb was dropped. Of course its hard to argue against a counterfactual, but it seems that many Japanese, even civilians were ready to fight to the death or commit suicide prior to conquest. |

Trump did weirdly take credit for a survey about upgrading older warheads, which started under the obama administration. We will need to build new warheads or retrofit old ones if we want to continue to have credible nuclear deterrence. I assume the Russians are doing the same. |
