whats the legal situation here? are they claiming some type of scarface political prisoner status?

They should set up some kind of camp. Have it be run by Saints. Not sure what they would call it though...

Reporters who work for American news agencies being drawn into a consulate in order to be tortured and killed under the orders of an ally(ish) nation state’s ruling family doesn’t happen all the time, but I agree that this is not THAT far outside the norm. I think it comes down to three things:
1. Heightened awareness of the event. People are paying attention to politics like never before, and because this was a Washington Post associated journalist, there are people with American media influence who have been able to amplify it.
2. The very graphic descriptions. They linger with people. Shady rulers get overthrown and killed from time to time, too, but a lot more people remember details about Gaddafi’s execution than remember most of the others...or remember anything about Gaddafi the ruler.
3. An almost fanatical devotion to the pope.
4. GOP legislator anger. They humored Trump’s (Kushner’s) “Rehab the Saudis Because I Owe Them” Program and feel used, so they have been among the loudest of the upset. There are people on both sides protesting this.
5. The brazen shittiness of the lies. Hard even for the skeptical to buy in on 3 entirely different and very poorly written excuses within a single week.
