So he just gave North Korea a free pass on any deliverables or program closures, setting his “victory” goalpost at literally any “positive relationship,”...on live TV.

The thing about not bothering to learn before you go into these things is that you end up making unmeetable demands and having no real idea how little sway over other countries you actually have. Lashing out in Canada over dairy is a complete lost cause, and a conflict that gains nobody anything.
Quote:
President Trump’s negotiators have demanded the dismantlement of Canada’s openly dirigiste system of supply management in agriculture – a complicated nexus of production quotas and import tariffs designed to ensure Canadian dairy, egg and poultry farmers receive fair prices for their products.
Expert observers have said that Justin Trudeau’s government would abandon the treaty altogether before sacrificing supply management, and pundits believe dismantling the popular program would be politically catastrophic for his party.
The dispute has acquired new urgency as the US dairy industry continues to suffer from a deep crisis of persistent overproduction, with farmers sinking into insolvency as farm-gate milk prices stick stubbornly below the cost of production. Last year, US farmers dumped almost 100m gallons of surplus milk.
Meanwhile, in Canada the dairy industry is thriving like never before – and like none other in the developed world. Family farms milking an average of 80 cows each have prospered under a heavily regulated system that supports prices at sustainable levels by restricting domestic overproduction and keeping imports at bay. In 2016, Canadian farmers received an average price of C$0.79 a litre for milk, compared with C$0.49 on average for US farmers.

Quite the photo.

Despite that pushback, Trump continued to insist in his remarks on Saturday that Russia should be allowed back into the group of nations. Doing so, he said, would be a "positive thing."
"I would say the G-8 is a more meaningful group than the G-7," he said, referring to the group's name prior to Russia's suspension.
Trump also made a veiled reference to Russia's annexation of Crimea, alluding to the fact that "something happened a while ago" that prompted Moscow's suspension from the G-7. He later placed blame on his predecessor, former President Obama, for allowing Russia to take control of the territory.

Just be honest about what milk and dairy supply management really is. It is an onerous tax paid by consumers of milk and dairy products that goes to farmers. Based on the numbers provided, the tax adds an additional 50%+ to the price for Canadians.
I wonder if the writer would be on side with Trump moving steel, aluminum and other supply chain resources to supply management and effectively barring all foreign sources of those products?
