Really shocked Chuck Grassley called Trump's windmill comments idiotic, but he's Mr Windmill. Pretty pathetic what Kim Reylonds said though, something along the lines of "who can say? Everything causes cancer". Why can't conservative leaders call out this stupid shit and just support Trump anyway?

This week has really illustrated how much the Trump presidency is just the Freedom Caucus show.
First we learned that when Trump said he would sign the budget proposal without wall money, pre-shutdown, Meadows and Jordan enlisted their associates to push a negative response at Fox News until the president became upset at the ugly coverage and threw a wall tantrum.
Now, Mulvaney has coaxed him into believing that his best foot forward is to support the ACA lawsuit and make vague promises about the future:
Quote:
Mulvaney has encouraged Trump to take aggressive moves that will appeal to his base, including the new assault on Obamacare.
Quote:
Mr. Trump has declared that he has kept his promises, Mr. Mulvaney and Mr. Grogan argued, and as a candidate he campaigned on repealing the health law. His base of voters would love it. Besides, they argued, Democrats have been campaigning successfully on health care, and Republicans should try to claim the issue for themselves. This could force the matter.
Among those with concerns was Pat Cipollone, the White House counsel, who shared that the new attorney general, William P. Barr, opposed such a move. Vice President Mike Pence was worried about the political ramifications of moving ahead without a strategy or a plan to handle the millions who could be left suddenly uninsured if the suit succeeded.

Keep in mind that Nielsen, Alles, and three other recent departures (the heads of the Emergency Management Agency and Citizenship and Immigration Services, and the DHS General Counsel) all represent top leadership positions at the Department of Homeland Security, which was approaching 50% vacancy among mid- and top leadership positions already.

This is more directly related to the administration’s desire to be tougher on the border.
They are gutting oversight and removing institutionalists, while militarizing enforcement groups like ICE. It’s the same logic that led him to pining in public about removing immigration judges from the process. It’s the same ambition that is leading us towards an expansion of family separations.
This, to my mind, is about weaponizing the department towards a single purpose, gutting security programs to redirect funds, and ejecting any potential opposition.
