So to summarize, at this point Trump’s full argument is “Russia did interfere in 2016, by colluding with Democrats to try and stop me from becoming president, and I’m very angry at the people who are investigating that interference.”

I actually think this tweet is best viewed in the context of the farm bailout and the dark money privacy maneuver: all three are the direct result of growing Republican alarm about the state of the upcoming elections.

I don’t think there’s nearly enough nervousness in the initial response to that tweet either.

Some circumstances where a person might make this absurd argument:

- If they wanted to build a narrative ahead of time that will help to cast doubt on Russian interference events to come.

- If they were prepared to invalidate elections in order to survive, but needed an excuse they could sell to the public. “Of course it’s a blue wave; the Russians did it!”

Obviously they might also do it if they were a deranged syphillic egomaniac, but that’s not mutually exclusive with the above.
