The National Rifle Association has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The gun rights advocacy group says it will leave a ‘corrupt political and regulatory environment’ in New York state and instead restructure as a nonprofit in Texas.

Leadership within the pro-Second Amendment group has been under fire for misusing millions of dollars in funds. In August 2020, NY Attorney General Letitia James announced that she was suing to dissolve the NRA for ‘years of self-dealing and illegal conduct.’ The NRA responded by suing James back, claiming that she violated its First Amendment rights. ‘The NRA's claimed financial status has finally met its moral status: bankrupt,’ AG James said in a statement after the bankruptcy announcement. ‘While we review this filing, we will not allow the NRA to use this or any other tactic to evade accountability and my office’s oversight.’

According to OpenSecrets, the NRA spent more than $32.3 million on political contributions, lobbying efforts, and other outside spending during the 2020 election cycle
