The board's server will undergo upgrade maintenance tonight, Nov 5, 2014, beginning approximately around 10 PM ET. Prepare for some possible down time during this process.

having said that did they really just lax the process for people who have mental health issues to get a gun?
Yep. Nothing safer than that, is there?
Goddammit. The fucking NRA makes me sick. After years of saying it's not gun's fault, it the system's for allowing this person that has mental problems to have a gun, now they've made it easier for them to get one.
WTF is happening?
I have to say that the ACLU, as usual, makes a compelling argument here:
Furthermore, I'm coming around to the belief that mental illness is incredibly overrated as a cause of gun violence. Instead, the focus needs to be more on people, mentally ill or not, who have a history of violent behavior. And remember that violent behavior of any sort more often than not comes from acquaintances.

Yes. I agree with that. The NRA needs to make its mind up, tho.

How can you, or do you , square that with the idea of rehabilitation?

...when you're deemed rehabilitated, you get your right to a gun back? I may not be sure what you're asking here.

I don't think that "mental health issues" rising to posing a danger to yourself or others are synonymous with being unable to do your own finances, which was the criteria this was based off of. They're doing a pretty shitty job of explaining this, but the finances thing is the criteria.

Mental illness is the first thing the pro-gun people yell when someone goes on a rampage. Now they've made it easier for someone who is mentally unstable to get a gun. Now what are they gonna blame the next time a Sandy Hook happens?

Obama
You're probably exactly right.

The decedent had (apparently) been declared incompetent to stand trial for a prior charge, and when he was 'returned' to competency, convicted of a felony.
This is a rather strange mechanism of the judicial system. Its important that the defendant be able to be involved in their defense at trial, but whether they can maintain competence outside the criminal justice system is of no serious consequence to the authorities.
If you were at any time (as an adult) found to be unable to contribute to your own defense suggests that you need some sort of 24 hour familial/ state supervision.
This individual was a felon, so there's no legal way for the shooter to have bought a gun.

Correction: The shooter is not deceased: Kori Ali Muhammad is very much alive and presumably still not well.
