The market cap of the three largest gun manufacturers in the US combined is less than $3B. With the exception of Northrop and BAE (massive defense contractors), the top 25 bullet manufactures in the US have a combined market cap of less than $3B.

what are you saying here? the number of guns in the US isn't contributing to the overall problem?

I think he’s suggesting it would be relatively easy to orchestrate a buy-out

Exactly.
I'm saying for a few billion dollars a rich lib like MacKenzie Scott or Mike Bloomberg could disrupt or potentially idle the production of firearms and ammunition in the United States.

You could maybe get volume down temporarily, but ideological manufacturers like Palmetto State Armory would be well situated to expand and fill the vacuum. Independent machine shops could also spin up 80% lowers and sell them as not-guns.
Tinkering around the edges is a lovely nudge-y approach, very fitting for our technocratic betters.

i understand what you are saying theoretically, but i'm sure there's legal arguments lawmakers would use to not let it happen. this also doesn't do anything about ghost guns, which are a huge problem in big cities.

It's not tinkering on the edges nor is it a 100% solution, but Remington and S&W make millions of new firearms each year. Smart capital use could choke that supply easily.

Right, nothing is 100%, but there is a dramatic difference in how the market would behave if the supply were cut down to a few hundred of thousand instead of millions. And there is no law that says people can't use their own capital to make it difficult to get guns, only that the government cannot and those laws that do pass are always losers anyway. The way to win is to play BlackRock style and financially crush them.

What kind of fiduciary duty do officers of private equity firms have? Can they just light piles of money on fire for political ends?

Well it wouldn’t be PE, a SPAC is a public vehicle. Then once the M&A roll up is done, transfer assets to a B-Corp with a pro-safety mission statement. Problem solved, theoretically speaking.
