It's 100 years today since Kaiser Wilhelm abdicated, the last emperor of Germany. On Sunday, at 11.11 am Central European Time, it will be 100 years since the end of World War 1.

Plenty of news stories about it, that are not worthy of a thread:

The First World War was one of the deadliest conflicts in history, killing more than 16 million people.
In November 1918, after four long years, the Armistice was signed and the guns fell silent.
In a series of special reports, we'll be marking the centenary of the war.

Peter Jackson’s WWI film is on tv on Sunday. It’s brilliant by all accounts. He restored tons of footage of the troops and their own voices playing over it. It’s very emotional apparently.

I’ve heard about it. Hope to see it one day.

Wow
Quote:
Romaine lettuce is unsafe to eat in any form, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday in a broad alert in response to a new outbreak of illnesses caused by a particularly dangerous type of E. coli contamination.

The CDC told consumers to throw away any romaine lettuce they may already have purchased. Restaurants should not serve it, stores should not sell it, and people should not buy it, no matter where or when the lettuce was grown. It doesn’t matter if it is chopped, whole head or part of a mix. All romaine should be avoided.

The sheer amount of hardright Christians calling for the islanders to be arrested and for him to be made a martyr and only a few breaths ago supporting trump giving a green light to troops to shoot immigrants at the border... it’s a more bizarre stupid world as the days go by

Isn't she just so quirky? I mean really, look at that tweet. It's so quirky! I bet she talks about playing with herself too.

(and no, I'm not researching that particular tweet right now)

They have been quietly banning several mid level accounts lately, though. I figure their strategy is to do it piecemeal so as not to create too much attention. I wonder if there will be a tipping point though.

Veterans Affairs Tells Capitol Hill It Won't Repay Underpaid GI Bill Benefit Recipients

This actually infuriates me because it feels like someone is trying to run the VA into the ground on purpose so that some private entity can come in and say "we can do it easier!" and then fuck it up worse.

If all eligible veterans took advantage of their benefits, the VA would implode. They are lucky only a fraction actually use the benefits. This is just sad.

I don't know the specifics of what he's done, but I'm inclined to say no. After all the bad publicity the VA has gotten, you'd think there would be sweeping changes. But there hasn't been. And my experiences with veteran services, whether it be at clinics, job placement, housing help, all seem to be very poorly run. Old buildings, antiquated equipment, government employees who are visibly miserable in their job, etc. Getting services from the VA shouldn't feel like I'm going in to a free clinic or waiting to fill out paperwork for food stamps, but it does. Old veterans looking sickly and poor, not understanding the system or how to fill out paperwork properly, spending most of their day in some 1950's government building that is depressing AF.. I'm rambling here. This isn't specific to Tester though. Just to the system as a whole.
