Injured protestors from Lebanon. Trying to figure out what projectile caused the injury in the upper left photo. Looks a bit like 12 ga wad, but it shouldn't have nearly enough mass or energy to do that much damage.

Seen a couple photos of plainsclothes cops or military using pistol grip pump shotguns against protestors. Even if they were using less lethal projectiles (they were probably using birdshot) who said yes to no stock? They seem to be typical 18" or so barrels. Just, why?

If we defund the police, they will be unable to buy pepperballs, rubber bullets, or teargas in sufficient quantities. They may be reduced to using birdshot, which is a fairly economical round $7 per 25 last I checked (thats retail, not buying it by the 1/4 ton).

Maybe we should defund the police, at least as far as crowd control munitions go.

some italian explosives guy claiming that based on the color of the beirut explosion there was probably more in that warehouse than just fertilizer

Quote:
Coppe explained his skepticism stating, “I do not believe there was that amount of ammonium nitrate at the Port of Beirut, nor that there was a fireworks depot,” even though there did appear to be fireworks that were detonated during the initial fire. He argues that certain evidence points to the fact that an explosive like lithium-metal was involved.

He explained, “Instead, from the videos of the explosion, in addition to the white sphere that can be seen expanding – which is condensation of the sea air – you can clearly see a brick orange column tending to bright red, typical of lithium’s presence.”

Several reports in the last week have suggested that a type of rocket fuel was involved, leading to the conclusion for many that Hezbollah was using at least one of the facilities to produce precision-guided missiles.

Take it to the conspiracy theory thread. :P

Other experts have claimed that the red color and shockwave speed are consistent with Ammonium Nitrate. The origin of the AN is documented, as are the requests to disposition it. Was that a cover story?

Across the Middle East, Arab governments are gradually pursuing foreign policies that, while mindful of Palestinian concerns, refuse to subordinate their national interests to Palestinian demands. Driven by common threats—most notably, a belligerent and fundamentalist Iran—and shared economic opportunities, Arab officials are showing an openness to Israel that has seldom, if ever, been seen before. Fed up with a recalcitrant Palestinian leadership, Arab leaders are moving on, declaring support for the Palestinians while fostering ever closer ties with Israel. As Dubai's vocal deputy police chief, Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, recently tweeted to his 2.8 million followers, "Rid yourselves of this notion that you don't build relations with Israel except at the command of [Palestinian Authority President] Mahmoud Abbas."

About goddamn time.

And words I never, ever thought I'd type: Trump might actually deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for this.

The Norwegian nominator:

“ Trump has broken a 39-year-old streak of American Presidents either starting a war or bringing the United States into an international armed conflict. The last president to avoid doing so was Peace Prize laureate Jimmy Carter.... The committee should look at the facts and judge him on the facts – not on the way he behaves sometimes. The people who have received the Peace Prize in recent years have done much less than Donald Trump. For example, Barack Obama did nothing.“

If there's a better thread for this, please move it to there.

All the ME and now NA peace deals with Israel are clearly complicated, but I'm curious about what developments made them happen now:

- US energy independence/ caring less about the region
- Iranian threat (not sure how thats relevant to the Sudan)
- Turkish adventurism (This has to factor in significantly, but only for certain countries.)
- Insurance for future US gov
- Wanting access to Israeli drones (and other weapons) that will not get cut off after well documented war crimes

Sudan hosted Al Qaeda just before their Afghan adventures, and now this...

No. 2 Al Qaeda guy (from back in the embassy bombing days) got offed in Iran back in August.

I used to work with an Iranian scientist. I broached the topic of maybe some Al Qaeda figures were harbored in Iran after the Afghanistan invasion. This was in the context of the bin Laden raid.

The Iranian strenuously denied it (for a generally quiet person). Maybe this was reflexive after the whole axis of evil speech.

Al Qaeda being there made some level of sense. Afghanistan only borders so many countries. Al Qaeda is fixated on the far enemy unlike ISIS and their near enemy Shia kill crews.

Presumably Iran curtailed their activities and viewed their presence as slightly less annoying than trying to hand them over or expelling them.

Anyhow, suck it Iranian scientist.

Pompeo and Netanyahu might have met with the Saudis. How is the Biden crew going to re-do the Iran deal at this rate? God, what position will Ben Rhodes get?

They found a body. Suicide bomber would be kinda weird considering the pre-recorded nature of the warning that appears to have come from the RV. Did the cops definitively say that they were broadcasting the loudspeaker evacuation warning?
