I have a soft spot for Florida. It's nice and warm and closer than California.

Spain's been cracking down quite a bit lately. Sounds like they're scared.

Have they submitted a public document explaining how they should be considered and are a separate people from the Spanish?

Have they drawn upon the support of the French Navy to deter their nominal overlords?

Its like they never saw the musical on revolution.

Spainish police are making a pretty good argument for separatism today.

Why not just ignore it and refuse to recognize the vote? Seems like a no brainer.

Not that I have a clue about that region, though.

To be honest "our heritage" was a common argument I heard growing up in the late 20th century but less so now. I also know such opinions are very much still around though.

Of all the weird, ridiculous views in America, one of the most confusing for me is how "real flag waving, America loving patriots" romanticize the Confederacy. That just makes absolutely zero sense.

Welcome to the South, my friend.

A by product of the recent demonstrations is that several statues commemorating the Confederacy have removed in the past couple. I think it's just a matter of time before the carving on Stone Mountain outside of Atlanta is removed/altered but I have no idea what time frame is. And if you didn't know it's a huge carving; 160 x 76 feet literally carved into a granite mountain. This particular site also has strong historic ties to the Klan, which pre date the memorial by decades. And to be clear, there KKK is not stronger or associated in the area now than it is any other particular spot.
Is there a need for any Confederate memorial anymore? Should all existing one go?
