The board's server will undergo upgrade maintenance tonight, Nov 5, 2014, beginning approximately around 10 PM ET. Prepare for some possible down time during this process.

This quote causes an actual tinge existential dread in me sometimes:
“Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.” ― Arthur C. Clarke

A theory I heard once was that aliens would maybe need our planet for resources - like a refueling station or whatever, but we’d be so less advanced than them that they’d just not bother.
Or it could be like the Keanu Reeves movie where they decide we aren’t good stewards of this planet and have had enough.
Either way, confirmation that aliens exist (or even better, contact with them) is toward the top of the list of things I’d like to witness before I die.
Even if aliens were benevolent, their germs would not be. We would look like indigenous Americans circa 1600 - huge percentages of the earth would be depopulated by disease.

There’s like 7-8 billion of us, with our own viruses that I assume they’d not be immune to. Maybe we ditch all the masks and form large crowds around them.

Euros killed off half or more of the indigenous American population, in return they (possibly) got syphilis. If the aliens are advanced enough to travel to earth, chances are we are not the first species they have contacted, and so their immune systems will have some experience dealing with extraterrestrial diseases. We have none of that, so they will probably be able to withstand our germs much better than we can deal with theirs.
In any case, even if they do all die along with us…we’re still dead.
Folks, if you come into contact with aliens you are far more likely to end up like Wilford Brimley in The Thing than Wilford Brimley in Coccoon. Just accept it.

I love the Cocoon reference, and can’t really disagree. Not sure you’ve accounted for Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum, but I’d probably join your team when it goes down.
