A significant tax break or other subsidy for producers/distributors to distribute to regional hubs seems like a remarkably easy solution. I’m not saying I have faith in congress to pull it together, only that all the moving parts are readily available

I'm not saying one of those moving parts works, but it sure is there!

Perhaps I was misreading Reich’s comment in the first place, and he is indicating that Congress won’t act. I simply assumed he made the same mistake as many others before him, which is assuming that hunger is a problem of food supply.

Maybe Reich means "unparalleled hunger" to be people in need of food.
People needing assistance affording enough food.

So not literally starving people, but food pantries and programs will be meeting the greatest need in a long time/ever/etc.

But it doesn't have a common, agreed upon meaning. So who knows and maybe he has elaborated on that point elsewhere.

As he said:

And unless Congress extends extra unemployment benefits beyond July 31, we’re also going to have unparalleled hunger.

Pretty important clause. It's not an issue of food supply, it's the buying-it-with-money part.

He's probably right. The school system in my county has become a de-facto soup kitchen, providing two meals a day to any child in the county who shows up even now that the traditional school year is over. And we are a top 20 county in the nation in terms of average household income.

The buying-it-with money part is a much smaller concern than if it were actually a food supply issue which would be disastrous. I maintain optimism that there will be a variety of programs, federal, state, local, and private that can and will ensure that this doesn't turn into a hunger crisis.

If everything is going up but the dollar is going down, is that inflation?

The Senate adjourning as the $600 added unemployment payment expires is a pretty big F-you to those who qualified for the program.

Isn't deflation the much bigger immediate concern?

-32.9% real GDP change in Q2.
