I've followed Franken closely for years, and the story that came out was suspect for a number of reasons. I think like 98% of the men accused (celebrities or otherwise) are guilty of taking advantage of their station, but that just didn't jive with everything I knew about Franken, and the railroad approach felt really dangerous considering all the good he'd done in the Senate.

Even if we stipulate that Tweeden had some political axe to grind, even after reading that I don't feel like I have enough of an explanation for all the other accusations that piled up after that. As I recall that time, it seemed like Franken had navigated the Tweeden accusation well until all the rest of that piled up.

I haven't read the whole piece yet, though I'm eager to -- but is "piling up" too strong a phrase hear? There were, I think, 3-4 other women who all said basically the same thing: "We took a photo together one time in public, and his hand was on my butt/boob."

Re: the "political calculus," I think it comes down to whether or not Tina Smith is on pace to be as effective on Indian Affairs, Rural Affairs, etc (I believe she inherited all of Franken's committee assignments).

It's funny to hear him say that he hit on fans while he was married, that he was arrogant, and abusive, but he's angry that people would believe bad things about him.
