This might be a good time to talk about reforming the ten year pipeline for the FDA to approve drugs for the market, but nah. Blaming this on capitalism and greed seems more productive. Down with the system, man! |

An MSF Doctor who lives in NYC has tested positive and is in quarantine. Was working in Africa 11 days ago. "Even as the authorities worked to confirm that Mr. Spencer was infected with Ebola, it emerged that he traveled from Manhattan to Brooklyn on the subway on Wednesday night, when he went to a bowling alley, and then took a taxi home. The next morning, he reported having a temperature of 103 degrees, raising questions about his health while he was out in public." |

They had an ebola researcher scientist on NPR the other day who said that even though you're technically contagious the moment you start exhibiting symptoms, there are degrees of how contagious you are. And you're only a real, super threat when you're so sick that you can barely get out of bed. If you're going for a 3 mile jog and riding the L train, you might technically be contagious, but there's almost no real chance you're spreading the disease to anyone. |

Yeah, people have been talking about it like, if you suddenly have a bit of a fever, you're automatically 100% contagious, like flipping on a switch. It's a gradual increase, apparently. Also, really the only thing you'd have to worry about on public transit would be sweat and spit. The guy did not vomit on the train. And apparently Ebola is non existent in spit or sweat until you're pretty much at death's door. |

Different people are going to have different viral loads with different levels of symptoms at different points through the infection cycle, every case is kinda unique, but I believe you are correct. It is highly unlikely this individual infected anyone (maybe the girlfriend), but the situation suggests that we are increasingly vulnerable and may need a more restrictive quarantine process for people who had direct contact infected individuals and not "self monitoring". |

A plane just landed in Columbia, SC because a passenger got a nosebleed. The pilot made an emergency landing because of a nosebleed. The guy wasn't coming from an international flight, didn't have contact with anyone from Africa, and now has hundreds of people pissed at him because of a nosebleed. |

Dear Kaci Hickox, Thank you for your service. You went to West Africa, you did a brave and kind thing, and you made America look good. That's wonderful. Now, please just stay at home for a couple of weeks. As a medical professional, you may think a quarantine is pointless and silly. But, quite frankly, we are frightened. It's a scary disease. Just humor us. Sincerely, The Argonaut |
